Sourcing Analysis: China

THE ASK

THE ASK

My group was tasked acting as consulting team presenting the profile of China to
a sourcing team consisting of apparel industry professionals looking to identify manufacturing partners outside of the U.S. The purpose is to provide a broad, yet critical snapshot of the manufacturing process in China and to make a recommendation as to whether China would make a good potential manufacturing partner.

The Process

  • Our process began with an analysis of the political, economical, social, and technological state of China in 2025. We wanted to identify the root of how China operates in the fashion industry.

  • Our next step was to compile our research to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in using China as a sourcing partner.

  • During this step we identified key factories that work with notable brands sold in the United States. We assessed their production capacity, location, machinery, and logistics.

  • To conclude, we suggested that you should not source from China and should prioritize markets with lower tariffs, stronger IP protection, and steadier labor laws.

Key Takeaway

My key takeaway from our sourcing analysis is the constant opportunity for optimization. I’m learning that it is important to grow with intention rather than by accident. Efficiency is extremely important as a professional. Optimization and efficiency isn’t about being perfect, it’s about making meaningful adjustments that add up over time.
